A Poem by Rita....

Enter GypsyNoir

Come and see the black sylphs of midnight hour.  Hedonistic heroines, we are fallen, and enslaved to this haunt.
Watch us sink our hips into bones into flesh into you into us.
Watch us unravel skirts as engulfing and black as the universe. We carry the undead force in every step, in every sweep and flash of fury.
Watch us carefully. You may see glimpses of vulnerability. Remembered times when blood ran riot in feverish youth.
Gypsies, vagrants, fallen women now risen in omnific force. Unafraid of the haunting trumpet ballads that play against the sound of rain on dark cobbled streets.
Watch us yield the sword that took life from us. Watch us be enrobed and disrobed and disembowelled by our own lust.
We are undying, writhing Isadoras.
We will feed you with our dance. We will feed you. We will feed. We will.

GypsyNoir Burlesque Attitude

What is Neo-Fusion? aka GypsyNoir style

You mean you don't know? Well neither do we but the following is as close as we could come in our own opinion. Please note that we reserve the right to change our minds at ANY time!

Neo (New) + Fusion (bringing together/integrating) = GypsyNoir Style

We see this as undefined form of dance that explores the boundaries between modern & cultural dance forms, theatrics and perhaps includes just a hint of the darkly exotic. We draw upon our collective dance experiences, interests & fantasies to create our own style of dance. It inevitably incorporates a base element of our Middle Eastern dance backgrounds (the majority of which is Tribal based) plus anything else that captures our fancy! This may include but is not limited to Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Turkish Gypsy, Classical Indian/Bollywood styles & Indonesian/Balinese dance.

A major influence for GypsyNoir is a love of all things Dark & Gothic (Hence the 'Noir' in our name) and we have a new and somewhat eclectic interest in fusing this with Asiatic, Techno/Cyber/Sci-Fi elements, Modern Gypsy along with a healthy dose of Burlesque Attitude!

We are also in the process of exploring Fire-twirling & related disciplines!

About ATS : A short synopsis by Fiona MacPherson (circa Feb 2006)

American Tribal Style Bellydance is a modern fusion form of bellydance that also incoporates stylistic elements of other ethnic dance styles including (but certainly not limited to) Flamenco and Asiatic Indian dance forms. Created in San Francisco by Carolena Nericcio of FatChance BellyDance in the late 1980's, it is a form of structured improvisational dance in that the dancers 'make up' the flow of movements as they go.

The appointed lead dancer leads the group of dancers through various movements using visual and sometime verbal cues. It has been ingeniously 'purpose built' to highlight the beauty, strength, skill & individuality of each dancer while working collectively within an encouraging group of sister dancers.

Appearing to be older than it is through the use of ethnic costuming elements borrowed from many different cultures it also is just as diverse in its accompanying music style selections, using everything from traditional Middle Eastern to modern global-fusion electronica.

The Evolution of ATS to 'Tribal Style Bellydance' - an opinion (circa May 2006)

The more commonly used terminology now is simply 'Tribal Style Bellydance', dropping the American. This has developed due to some confusion within the community when using the references of American and Tribal together. The usage of the term 'American Tribal' often leads to questions regarding whether it incorporates elements of the Indigenous Native American culture.

This change in terminology also perhaps alludes to the spread of the danceform beyond the American continent and that it is continuously evolving to become such a diverse and broadly orientated dance form influenced by so many. Although we honour its origins and adhere to the basic tenet of ATS in its structure as a danceform based on Group orientated structured improvisational dance.
